Arthritis Doesn't have to Control your Life

Kirsty McCrann, Chartered Physiotherapist

As a chartered physiotherapist, I understand that arthritic pain can be a significant burden on your life. Arthritis is a chronic condition that can cause inflammation, stiffness, and pain in the joints. It can affect almost any joint in the body, but it is most common in the hands, hips, knees, and spine. Arthritic pain can make it challenging to move and perform daily activities, which can have a significant impact on your quality of life.

However, there are ways to manage arthritic pain, and as a physiotherapist, I can help you with arthritis by improving your mobility and reducing pain. Here are some tips for managing arthritic pain:

Exercise regularly
Regular exercise can help to keep the joints mobile and reduce pain. Low-impact activities such as swimming, cycling, or walking can be particularly beneficial. As a physiotherapist, I can help you to develop an exercise routine that is safe and appropriate for your needs.

Maintain a healthy weight
Carrying excess weight can put extra pressure on the joints, which can exacerbate arthritic pain. Losing weight can help to reduce the strain on the joints and improve mobility.

Use heat or cold therapy
Applying heat or cold to the affected joints can help to reduce pain and inflammation. Heat therapy can be particularly useful for stiff joints, while cold therapy can help to reduce swelling and inflammation.

Consider manual therapy
Manual therapy can help to improve mobility, reduce pain, and prevent further damage to the joints. We can develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs, which may include exercises, manual therapy, and other techniques.

Take medication as prescribed
Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help to reduce pain and inflammation. It is essential to take medication as prescribed and to be aware of any potential side effects.

Use assistive devices
Assistive devices such as braces, splints, or sticks can help to reduce pressure on the joints and improve mobility. We can advise you on which devices may be helpful and how to use them correctly.

Practise good posture
Maintaining good posture can help to reduce strain on the joints and prevent further damage. Certain exercise routines such as Pilates can be very helpful for strengthening postural muscles and improving flexibility in order to maintain good posture.

Arthritic pain can be a challenging condition to manage, but there are ways to improve mobility and reduce pain. As a physiotherapist, I can help you with arthritis to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs, which may include exercise, manual therapy, medication, and other techniques. By working together, we can help to improve your quality of life and reduce the impact of arthritic pain.
