Safely Getting Back to an Activity After a Long Layoff

Kirsty McCrann, Chartered Physiotherapist

Have you been away from your favourite activity for a long time due to injury, illness, or just life getting in the way? Returning to the activity can be exciting, but it's important to do so safely to avoid re-injury or further damage. As a chartered physiotherapist, I have helped many clients safely return to their activities after a long layoff. In this article, I'll share some tips for doing so.

Assess Your Current Level of Fitness
Before returning to your activity, it's important to assess your current level of fitness. This can be done by consulting with a physiotherapist, who can perform a physical assessment and identify any potential areas of concern. The physiotherapist can then create a customized plan to help you gradually and safely increase your activity level.

Start Slow and Gradually Increase Intensity
It's important to start slow and gradually increase the intensity of your activity to avoid re-injury. This can be done by gradually increasing the duration and intensity of your activity over time, taking frequent breaks, and listening to your body's signals.

Warm-Up and Cool-Down
Warming up and cooling down before and after your activity is crucial to avoid injury. A proper warm-up should include dynamic stretching and movements specific to your activity. A cool-down should include stretching and breathing exercises to help your body recover from the activity.

Cross-Training and Strengthening
Cross training is defined as a specific modality of exercise other than your primary activity. It can include different types of activities such as cardiovascular exercise, strength training and flexibility exercises such as Pilates or yoga. Cross-training and strengthening exercises can help prepare your body for the demands of your activity and reduce the risk of injury. We can help design a program of exercises that target the specific muscle groups used in your activity and help you build strength and flexibility.

Returning to an activity after a long layoff can be challenging, but with the right advice, it can be done safely and effectively. By assessing your current level of fitness, gradually increasing intensity, warming up and cooling down, and incorporating cross-training and strengthening exercises, you can reduce the risk of re-injury and enjoy your activity with confidence.
